This guide covers everything you need to know about playing at Pennsylvania online casinos. It discusses real and play-money gaming, available casinos, and legality.

You can also learn about PA casino bonuses, loyalty rewards, and how to make deposits. These aspects are all important for both enjoying real-money games and boosting your winnings.

Additionally, you can check out some of the frequently asked questions based on the Pennsylvania online gaming market.

Play online casino games on your mobile device

PA gaming sites are compatible with major mobile operating systems. Therefore, you’ll be able to play at Pennsylvania casinos through Android and iOS (iPad & iPhone) devices.

You must ensure that you’re within state lines when paying at these sites. Pennsylvania uses geolocation technology to ensure that you’re in the state for legal reasons.

Assuming you’re gambling on a smartphone near the border, then you should make sure you’re on the right side of the state line.

Pennsylvania mobile casinos break down into two camps:

  • Apps
  • In-browser play

Regarding the former, you’ll need to download the appropriate Android or iOS app. Android apps are available on casino websites, while iOS apps are found in the App Store.

In-browser play lets you enjoy casino games directly through your browser. If you use Safari, for example, then you’ll just open the Safari web browser and visit the desired casino site to play.

Overall, both Pennsylvania casino apps and in-browser play are comparable in terms of features and gameplay. You can’t go wrong with casinos that offer one or the other option.

Playing for Real Money

In October 2017, Pennsylvania legalized online casino gambling. The Keystone State saw its first gaming sites launch in July 2019.

Ever since, real-money internet gaming has been available in PA. You just need to meet the age (21) requirement and be physically present in the state to gamble online.

Each Pennsylvania online casino offers several banking options. You can choose from these deposit methods based on preference to fund your account.

PA gaming sites offer a wide variety of stakes. Slots typically feature stakes ranging from $0.20 to $100, while table games boast limits from $0.10 to $500.

The stakes largely depend upon the casino you’re dealing with. In any case, you’ll be able to find betting limits that suit your needs—whether you’re a low or high roller.

Playing for Free

Real-money gambling may provide thrills and excitement. However, you don’t need to wager anything to play Pennsylvania online casino games.

Every gaming site in the state lets you enjoy games for free. You need to register for an account to play free casino games.

Once you own an account, you’ll be able to play virtual slots and table games with play-money chips. Free games give you an opportunity to try out a casino before depositing.

Unfortunately, live-dealer table games aren’t available for demo mode. Casinos must pay real dealers to run these games, so they can’t just let you play for free.

Other than this caveat, you’ll have access to a casino’s entire selection after registering for an account. You can use free casino games for entertainment purposes and/or to decide if you like certain gaming sites.

Best Pennsylvania Online Casinos

The Pennsylvania online gaming market offers several internet casinos. The following three sites are the cream of the crop at the time of this writing.

Unibet Casino Pennsylvania

Unibet has long been one of the key players in the European online gaming industry. They’ve recently brought their expertise to Pennsylvania through a partnership with Mohegan Sun Pocono.

This casino does a solid job of offering promotions on a regular basis. You’ll be able to earn cashback, deposit bonuses, and reload offers. You can also participate for prizes in leaderboard races.

Unibet currently offers the most casino games in the PA market. They feature over 300 games and are constantly adding to this library.

You can enjoy many slots, virtual table games, and live table games here. Unibet’s live dealer studio is a special treat.

Assuming you value game variety above all, then you should definitely take a close look at Unibet. They’re leading the Keystone State in game quantity right now.

This site’s deposit methods include credit cards, debit cards, e-checks, e-wallets, and prepaid cards. Withdrawal options consist of e-checks, Play+ prepaid card, and PayPal.

Given all these banking options, you shouldn’t have any trouble depositing and cashing out from Unibet Casino.

SugarHouse Online Casino

PlaySugarHouse Casino isn’t the largest gaming site in Pennsylvania. However, they’ve carved out a niche in this market thanks to an impressive loyalty program.

SugarHouse offers an iRush Rewards program that lets you earn comp points online and in Philadelphia’s SugarHouse Casino.

You collect points based on a combination of your betting volume and each game’s return to player (RTP). The points count towards cashback, wheel spins, or the in-house store.

You can easily keep track of your points by looking at your account section. This area shows how close you are to attaining certain rewards.

The SugarHouse Casino slots section doesn’t rival other market leaders like Unibet and Hollywood. However, this site does offer dozens of slots from several different providers.

Some of the popular slots at SugarHouse include Butterfly Staxx, Flowers, Hotline, and Starburst. They also offer large progressive jackpots that can be worth up to six figures.

Casino

Virtual table games include multiple blackjack variations, multiple roulette games, baccarat, and three-card poker. You can also look forward to playing several video poker variations here.

Banking options include credit/debit cards, e-checks, PayNearMe, cash at the cage (SugarHouse Philadelphia), wire transfer, and mailed checks.

Hollywood Online Casino

Hollywood Casino PA was the first to launch in the PA internet gaming market. This first-mover advantage has helped them remain among the state’s top online casinos.

Hollywood features the largest no-deposit bonus ($25) in the market. They also do an excellent job at offering deposit bonuses, cashback, and VIP rewards.

Unfortunately, the Hollywood slots selection features many dated games, such as IGT’s Cleopatra, Da Vinci Diamonds, and Siberian Storm. However, it also offers some more-modern options from NetEnt.

This site boasts an impressive array of roulette variations, including American roulette, European roulette, French roulette, and “Roulette Advanced.” Other games at Hollywood online casino PA include blackjack, craps, Let It Ride, Pai Gow Poker, Spanish 21, and Slingo.

Hollywood Casino also features a MyChoice rewards program. This loyalty plan, which is also aligned with Penn National Gaming properties, offers points on your slots, table game, and video poker play.

You can deposit at this casino using credit/debit cards, e-checks, Play+ prepaid card, and PayNearMe. This isn’t the largest selection of deposit methods, but it should still provide you with enough options to fund your account.

Is online gambling legal in Pennsylvania?

The Keystone State legalized online gaming in October 2017. This act paved the way for legal online casinos in Pennsylvania.

The market was finally up and running by July 2019. Now, several online casinos are available to PA residents.

In addition to internet gaming, online poker and sports betting are also legal in Pennsylvania. Internet poker and sports betting legislation passed at the same time as online casinos.

However, sports betting was previously subject to a federal ban. The US Supreme Court lifted this ban in May 2018.

Pennsylvania operators quickly went to work on their sports betting market in the aftermath. The first PA online sportsbook launched in May 2019.

Below, you’ll find a summary of all the legal forms of online gambling in Pennsylvania:

  • Casino gaming
  • Lottery
  • Poker
  • Sports betting

What kind of games do PA casinos offer?

The Pennsylvania internet gaming market is rapidly expanding. Casinos are offering more and more options each month.

Most of these games fall into the online slots category. The average PA casinos features between 150 and 300 slots.

These slot machines come from some of the industry’s biggest providers, including Bally, IGT, NetEnt, NextGen, and WMS.

PA online slots span a broad range of categories, including 3-reel, 5-reel, bonus, and progressive jackpots. The latter, as you’ll read later, can offer jackpots worth $300,000 or more.

This market also features quite a few online table games. The table games break down into two distinct classes: virtual and live dealer.

Virtual table games feature software-generated graphics. However, they offer realistic depictions of cards, chips, dealers, roulette wheels, and/or table felts.

The virtual category offers a wider range of games than the live-dealer sector. Most PA casinos feature multiple versions of virtual blackjack and roulette.

They also feature Caribbean stud, craps, casino hold’em, Let It Ride, Pai Gow Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, and more.

Live dealer games lets you enjoy the brick-and-mortar casino experience through a mobile device or computer. You can interact with the dealer and watch real cards dealt.

However, you also need to act within a given timeframe. You’ll automatically fold and miss a chance to bet if the timer runs out.

Baccarat, blackjack, and roulette are available at most live casinos. Caribbean stud, casino hold’em, and three-card poker may also be available, depending upon the site.

Finally, video poker offers yet one more style of casino games in the PA market. Each gaming site features multiple versions of video poker, like Bonus Poker, Deuces Wild, Double Bonus, and Jacks or Better.

Loyalty reward programs

Pennsylvania online casinos offer VIP programs as a means of retaining your loyalty. These loyalty plans commonly offer deposit bonuses, free spins, and cashback.

You can work your way up the VIP ladder towards better rewards by gambling more. The top levels feature special perks, such as a host, higher deposit/withdrawal limits, and large bonuses.

Some PA internet casinos tie their loyalty schemes in with their land-based establishments. In these cases, you generate comp points in both the online and brick-and-mortar casinos.

These programs let you earn rewards that are more customizable. For instance, you may be able to exchange online comp points for a hotel room at a casino resort.

How to deposit online

You need to deposit before playing for real money in the PA internet gaming market. Luckily, you shouldn’t find this process to be overly difficult.

You can complete deposits in a few simple steps:

  • Visit the relevant casino’s banking section.
  • Find a deposit option you can use (e.g. Visa).
  • Enter how much you’d like to deposit.
  • Confirm the transaction and wait for funds to arrive.

This basic description covers the jest of what you must know to deposit at Pennsylvania online casinos. You can visit our banking page to find out more about this process.

Bonuses and bonus codes

PA gaming sites offer different types of deposit bonuses. You can use these deals to pad your winnings or recoup losses.

Below, you can see the main bonuses offered at Pennsylvania online casinos:

  • Welcome bonus – This deposit bonus is available when you make your first deposit. It’s usually the largest offer available at a casino.
  • No-deposit bonus – You receive this deal upon registering for an account—no deposit necessary.
  • Reload bonus – This deposit bonus is available after you’ve already exhausted the welcome offer.
  • Special promotion – Casinos often feature special bonuses around the holidays and their anniversaries.

Most deposit bonuses are based on a match percentage of your deposit. For example, you might receive a 100% match on your first deposit worth up to $1,000.

You must also meet terms and conditions before withdrawing the money. Less-stringent T&Cs allow you to get bonus funds quicker.

Some casinos require that you enter specific codes to qualify for bonuses. That said, you want to use the appropriate code (if any) when making a deposit.

FAQ

What kind of online casino games are available in Pennsylvania?

The PA market offers slots, virtual table games, live dealer games, and video poker. Slots comprise the bulk of what’s available at gaming sites.

You’ll find many different types of slots throughout the market. These games differ based on their number of reels, jackpots, bonuses, graphics, and more.

Virtual table games let you control the speed of the action. However, they don’t offer quite the same feel as brick-and-mortar casino games.

Live dealer gaming solves the latter problem by featuring a human dealer, table, and equipment. But it also requires that you act within a designated time limit.

Video poker offers another online option in Pennsylvania. Most gaming sites feature several different video poker variations.

Do I have to live in Pennsylvania to play online?

No, you don’t need to be a resident of Pennsylvania to play at legal online casinos. You must be physically present in PA, though, to bet real money.

Sites use geolocation technology to determine if you’re within state lines. Assuming you’re not, you’ll receive a warning that playing for real money outside of PA is against the law.

Also, you need to be at least 21 to play. If caught, you’ll be reprimanded for playing Pennsylvania online casino games as a minor.

Do PA casinos have live dealer casino games?

Yes, Pennsylvania offers live dealer games. These games give you the opportunity to enjoy land-based casino gaming through a smartphone, tablet, PC, or Mac.

Most PA casinos feature live baccarat, blackjack, and roulette. Some sites even offer a wider selection that includes Caribbean stud, casino hold’em, and/or three-card poker.

Can you win real money at PA online casinos?

You can play for and win real money at Pennsylvania gaming sites as soon as you deposit. The deposit section on this page describes how to fund your account.

The size of your wins depends upon the specific game and what stakes you’re betting. For example, a $1 blackjack bet doesn’t offer as much win potential as a $1 slots wager.

You should think about how much you’re interested in winning before choosing a game and betting limit. The PA market offers plenty of games and stakes to choose from.

Can you win progressive jackpots in Pennsylvania?

The Pennsylvania online gaming market isn’t very large. Already, though, it offers some huge progressive jackpots.

NetEnt’s Divine Fortune has proven particularly popular among jackpot seekers. It has paid multiple six-figure prizes, including one worth $376,893 in October 2019.

PA gaming is still relatively young at the time of this writing. The market could very well offer jackpots worth seven figures in the future.

Responsible gambling and the PGCB

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) runs a program for compulsive gamblers. Through the program, PA problem gamblers can add themselves to a self-exclusion list.

Those wishing to join the self-exclusion list must fill out necessary forms and provide a photo ID. They can request to be excluded from the PA online/land-based gambling market for one year, five years, or a lifetime.

Online and land-based casinos are responsible for ensuring that excluded gamblers don’t play for real money. Each gaming venue will receive the list of exclusions.

Anybody who wishes to be removed from the list must wait until their self-exclusion period is up. Furthermore, they need to contact the PGCB and ask for the ban to be lifted.

The Pennsylvania online casinos launch made the state just the third US state to offer state-regulated, legal online casinos.

All of Pennsylvania’s online casinos operate in partnership with the state’s land-based casinos. Of the state’s 12 retail casinos, more than half currently offer online casino platforms.

Pennsylvania’s online casino industry debuted in July 2019. The first year of the new industry saw no less than 10 different mobile casinos launch in the state.

With the industry still in its infancy, Pennsylvania’s online casinos don’t yet offer the same number of games as some of the online casinos operating in New Jersey. Many of New Jersey’s mobile casinos offer several hundred different games, as legal online casino gaming launched in 2013 in the state.

Most of Pennsylvania’s online casinos offer around 100 games each, with game libraries expanding every month. Like other retail and online casinos, slots dominate the catalogs of each Pennsylvania mobile casino.

Number Of Casino Games Offered

Parx Casino leads the pack in terms of the overall number of games. Powered by a catalog of more than 100 slot variants, Parx Online Casino is living up to the reputation of its parent company. Parx Casino is the biggest and highest-earning retail casino in Pennsylvania.

Live dealer table games, in which online players interact with a live dealer and other players, will be introduced in the future as well.

With this geolocation technology in place, players can enjoy the casino gaming experience from anywhere in the state.

Online casino gaming offers Pennsylvania players the ease and convenience of playing, depositing, and withdrawing from any mobile device or desktop. Many of the games enjoyed by players on a physical casino floor are found on these legal casino apps.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) regulates all of Pennsylvania’s online casinos, like their retail counterparts.

Pennsylvania’s Online Gambling Industry

Some of the biggest players in Pennsylvania’s online casino industry include DraftKings Casino (operated in partnership with Penn National Hollywood Casino), SugarHouse Casino (Rivers Casino), and FanDuel Casino (Valley Forge Casino Resort).

The PGCB breakdown of overall revenue from the state’s online casinos can be read here.

Pennsylvania’s Biggest Online Casinos By Earnings

Rivers Philadelphia emerged as Pennsylvania’s top revenue-earning operator in the early months of the industry’s launch but has since been topped by Penn National Hollywood Casino (DraftKings Casino, Hollywood Casino, BetMGM).

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reports online casino revenue by operator, making it impossible to know how each of the Penn National Hollywood Casino or Rivers Philadelphia skins performs individually. The combined revenue of DraftKings Casino, Hollywood Casino, and BetMGM, however, puts Penn National Hollywood Casino in the lead in terms of revenue by operator.

The latest reports show that in June 2020, the operator brought in nearly $35 million in online casino revenue. It leads the market by nearly $10 million.

Rivers Casino Pennsylvania, while no longer the frontrunner, brings in substantial revenue to the state. It brought in $23,336,153 in revenue for June 2021.

As a license partner of Valley Forge Casino Resort, FanDuel Casino continues to make an impact. June saw the platform bring in $14,953,787, making it the third-highest online casino revenue earner for the period.

Pennsylvania’s History Of Online Gaming

Pennsylvania put big plans for gambling expansion in motion in October 2017. Governor Tom Wolf signed House Bill 271 into law. The bill laid out the legislature’s plans for Pennsylvania to potentially become one of the biggest online gambling economies in the US.

House Bill 271 legalized sports betting (both land-based and online), online casinos, and online poker. It also formally legalized Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS).

Pennsylvania is one of five states (along with New Jersey, Delaware, Michigan, and West Virginia) to legalize all three verticals of online sports betting, casinos, and poker. As of November 2020, Michigan is the only one still awaiting launch, though it’s expected to go live in early 2021.

Overturning PASPA

The state legislation for online sports betting went into place in October 2017, with one hurdle still left to clear. That final obstacle was overcome in May 2018, when PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) was overturned.

PASPA, originally put into law in 1992, was a federal ban on sports wagering. With the exception of Nevada and sports lotteries in a handful of other states, PASPA mandated that sports betting was illegal in the US.

In May 2018, however, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional. This gave states the power to legalize sports betting on an individual basis.

The Launch Of PA Online Gambling

The first of Pennsylvania’s online sportsbooks went live in May 2019, when PlaySugarHouse Pennsylvania launched. Pennsylvania bettors now have several different mobile sports betting platforms to choose from.

The origins of Pennsylvania’s land-based casinos go back to the state’s long-standing horse racing industry.

The 2004 Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act authorized seven of the state’s horse racing venues to install slot machines. It also authorized licenses for up to five more stand-alone casinos and two resort casinos.

From those original expansion plans, the Pennsylvania gaming industry evolved into the current 12 land-based casinos.

The Pennsylvania Casinos

Parx Casino is one of the largest and most popular casino in the state. Located just northeast of Philadelphia in Bensalem Township, Parx Casino was one of the original seven horse racing venues to expand into casino gaming after the state passed the 2004 legislation.

Then known as Philadelphia Park Racetrack and Casino, the property grew into the state’s highest-earning casino property, with $639 million in revenue in 2019.

Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment, Inc., owns Parx Casino. Wind Creek Hospitality owns Wind Creek Bethlehem, the state’s second highest-earning property. The Poarch Band of Creek Indians operates Wind Creek.

Rush Street is the parent company to Rivers Casino Philadelphia and Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, in addition to two additional Rivers Casino properties outside of Pennsylvania.

Gaming and Leisure Properties is another company operating multiple Pennsylvania casinos. They operate Meadows Racetrack and Casino and Hollywood Casino. Caesars Entertainment is another player in the PA casino industry. They operate Harrah’s Philadelphia.

Due to PGCB regulations, a maximum of 14 land-based casinos can operate within the state.

Legal Pennsylvania Online Casinos Versus Illegal Online Casinos

As one of just a handful of states with legal online casinos, Pennsylvania offers access to a growing number of mobile gambling platforms. Each of these casinos expands its game libraries every month, which allows Pennsylvania players to enjoy the best of mobile casino gaming.

State-Regulated And Secure Online Casinos

Pennsylvania’s land-based casinos own all of the state’s online casinos, in partnership with approved technology partners. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) oversees and regulates all of the state’s online gambling sites.

The PGCB, a government agency, also regulates Pennsylvania’s retail casino industry. Playing on a legal, state-regulated online casino platform in Pennsylvania ensures the same level of safety as playing at one of the state’s retail casinos.

Legal retail and online casinos in Pennsylvania operate with a vested interest in providing fair games and prompt payouts. These platforms also provide the highest level of encryption to protect personal information.

Risks From Offshore Gambling Sites

Offshore gambling sites can’t guarantee this same level of fairness, transparency, and personal protection. Playing from Pennsylvania on any gambling site not regulated by the PGCB doesn’t have the same oversight as the state’s legal casinos.

Offshore gambling sites in the US are also operating illegally, possibly exposing players to criminal penalties.
